Fiber line cut disrupts phone, internet service

WALSENBURG — A fiber optic line cut Monday caused most residents of the Spanish Peaks area and some as far away as the San Luis Valley to be without long distance telephone and internet services for much of the day.
CenturyLink issued a statement late Monday that said an inadvertent line cut at about 10:45 am between Pueblo and Colorado Springs caused service outages of long distance telephone, cell phones and Internet south into the Walsenburg and SLV regions.

La Veta to begin to repair town’s aging dams

LA VETA — The Town of La Veta received notification from the Colorado Water Conservation Board that a loan request in the amount of $372,690 for the repair of the North Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project has been approved. The project is slated to start in the fall of 2012 or spring of 2013.

County working towards revolving loan fund

WALSENBURG—The Huerfano County Commission on Wednesday, Feb 8, heard from the county administrator about the possibility of the county receiving a $50,000 revolving loan fund from the economic development group in Las Animas County.
The Las Animas Economic Development Commission hasnʼt used the funds and has offered to turn them over to Huerfano County along with software that manages the fund. The cost of the software is about $2,000 a year.

Dougherty brothers lead guilty

Dylan and Ryan Dougherty, the brothers of the infamous Dougherty siblings, who were arrested in Walsenburg on August 10 after a nationwide manhunt, have both accepted plea deals.
Ryan Dougherty, 21, pleaded guilty to five counts of felony menacing.
Dylan Stanley-Dougherty, 26, pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree assault.
All other charged against the two were dismissed.
On Feb. 9, their sister, Lee Grace Dougherty pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree assault against a peace officer and two counts of felony menacing.

Lee Grace Dougherty pleads guilty to 3 counts-
attempted assault in the 1st degree, a class 4 felony, and pled guilty to two counts of felony menacing, one against Officer Craig Lessar and Joseph Albano. Judge Appel then read from a six-page document the definitions of each count and the sentencing recommendations per Colorado Statute. Dougherty will spend nine to 28 years in the DOC. Sentencing will be April 30, at 10am.
Appel also explained the rights Dougherty is giving up. Appel asked Dougherty if she implicitly understood the documents she signed.

Judge postpones Doughertys trial

WALSENBURG — A Monday morning appearance by the Dougherty brothers on Jan. 30 resulted in District Court Judge Claude Appel postponing a trial for the two until after they’ve either put in a “not guilty” plea or reached a plea deal with the District Attorney. The judge gave each a deadline of Feb. 16.

Dam it, La Veta

LA VETA- The Colorado Water Conservation Board loaned the town of La Veta funds totaling $372,000 to repair the town’s aging reservoir system. The three percent, 30 year loan will cover 90 percent of the $410,000 project.
“Like everywhere, we have an aging infrastructure,” said Rob St. Peter, who operates the town’s water system. “It leaks, and we can’t shut it off.”

Fire alarms at Gardner School

WALSENBURG — Huerfano School District Re-1 held a special board meeting last Tuesday night, Jan. 31 in the administration office.
After the meeting was called to order and the agenda was approved, Gardner school had some business to discuss. On Monday, Jan. 31 an electrical smell was detected in the building and the students were evacuated outside. The fire department was called and after investigation, a faulty fan was believed to be the cause.

Commissioners to file water protest­

WALSENBURG — As the drought deepens, the county is seeing stresses on its water supplies as Two Rivers Water seeks to purchase abandoned rights along the Huerfano River and change the uses and location of uses for the rights it already owns.
Applications filed at Division Two Water Court by the water company have come under fire from the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District, ranchers along the Huerfano River and the county commission.
