Shell previews plans for development in Huerfano County

WALSENBURG — The Communication Forum heard from Philippe Heer, the Huerfano County Project Manager for Shell Western Exploration and Production Inc., on Thursday, Feb. 2 in the meeting room at the Huerfano County Community Center. It was the first time the forum was given an overview of Shell’s plans on oil and gas development in the county.

Colorado snowpack remains below average

Denver- January saw the Pacific jet stream finally begin to shift southward; by mid January it had positioned itself over southern Wyoming and northern and central Colorado bringing much needed precipitation to basins west of the Continental Divide. In a reversal of conditions earlier this season, basins east of the Divide saw very little snowfall during this period. Unfortunately these storms were not enough to boost the statewide snowpack significantly.

City council puts off lift station decision

WALSENBURG — Ignoring the advice of the old saying, the Walsenburg City Council Tuesday night decided to take a long, hard look into the mouth of a potential ‘gift horse’ before agreeing to take possession of it.
The gift horse in question is the not yet constructed lift station that would service the new Chaé Organics factory operation proposed to be built west of the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center.

Mayor boosts Northlands to finance committee

WALSENBURG — Delivering a statement to the city’s finance committee Monday, Feb. 7, Mayor Larry Patrick tied the economic development of Walsenburg to the growth of the Northlands District.

Hospital board discusses ER upgrades, renovation

WALSENBURG — County Hospital District Board members met in a work session Monday to discuss the ongoing topic of possible renovations to the facility’s emergency medicine department.
The board and administration met for slightly over two hours but did not make any concrete decisions regarding the possible project.

Occupy comes to Huerfano County

HUERFANO — On Saturday, Jan. 27 in the meeting room of the La Veta Library, Rod House officially expanded his one-man Occupy La Veta movement to a general assembly of approximately 36 folks from all around the county.
He emphasized that the Occupy movement has never been about the notions of one person; Occupy has no leaders, no hierarchy, no spokespersons. Instead, Occupy is all about statements that arise from general assemblies where people find consensus and a common voice. Occupy is about the welfare of the 99%.

La Veta School Board approves revised 2011-2012 budget

LA VETA — The La Veta School Board, with members Campbell, Kreutzer, Law and Schneider present, unanimously approved a revised 2011-2012 budget that was slightly higher than proposed in June of 2011.
The final budget comes in at $2,971,092. Changes were largely due to adjustments based on bringing the accounting system into line with the state-recommended Chart of Accounts system for public school districts. The good news is that the district should have more cash in reserves at the end of the year than originally projected.

RE-1 School Board: Resignations accepted with regret, Gardner drops charter proposal

WALSENBURG — An evening meal was shared at the John Mall High School cafeteria that included the current school board members and some of the John Mall High School staff. The regularly scheduled board meeting convened shortly afterwards.
Retirement letters were read and accepted with heavy hearts. Those leaving are Gardner teacher Elizabeth Schneider, John Mall art teacher Linn Baker, and Gardner special ed teacher Linda Jardine.

Arrest warrant issued in tree cutting case

WALSENBURG — A felony arrest warrant was prepared in November following the conclusion of the investigation of criminal mischief by Walsenburg police concerning the illegal cutting down of two honey locust trees located on Main Street.

Pleas taken and trial dates set in assault, kidnapping case

WALSENBURG — Two local men charged in connection with an alleged abduction and sexual assault of a Walsenburg teenager entered not guilty pleas in district court here Jan. 12.
Separate trials have now been set for Laqun Murphy, 30 and Daniel Willburn, 26, both of Walsenburg, on charges stemming from the September 2011 attack.
District Attorney Frank Ruybalid filed nine charges against the pair who were arraigned last Thursday in district court.
