Denver, CO, The Pepsi Center- After a twenty-two year hiatus from the championship finals, the La Veta Redskins will have a representative in the class 2A championship finals as senior Adam Ortivez defeated Dalton Randolph of Dove Creek. Randolph entered the tourney as the number four ranked wrestler by pin in a time of 1:58 seconds, controlling Dalton like a wet rag, never letting go of his fast 2 point takedown. From the onset, Ortivez took control of his opponent and dominated every aspect of the match.

Denver CO. Pepsi Center- The first day of the 2012 State wrestling tournament is a thing of the past and the area wrestlers are 2-5 in advancing to the next rounds. Adam Ortivez, wrestling at 138 pounds came into the tournament as the number one ranked wrestler and number one seed and he shown the 138 pound division why he was named by Tim Yount’s ‘On the Mat’ forum as the man expected to win it all. He took little time to defeat his first opponent, Travis Hill of Akron by pin in a time of 1:22. He will wrestle tomorrow in the championship quarter-finals against Nick Williams of Hayden.

Denver CO- For five area wrestlers their road to placing at state begins with a must win matchup tomorrow morning against their opponents. It doesn’t stop there. To place, they need to win the next three bouts to wrestle for fifth place and four match-ups to wrestle for third. For the losers, their state tournament experience would be over.

Redskin basketball teams win big

LA VETA — Last Saturday the La Veta basketball teams won big at home against the Crested Butte Titans. The gym was packed with fans as the Redskins hosted the Titans.
The Lady Redskins were on fire and never let up as they defeated the Titans, 42 to 24. Senior Jacey Day and sophomore Ashton Rinker were the high scorers for the game. Once again Day had the most rebounds with 15. This week freshman Rena Trujillo was player of the week.

Panthers drop pair of league encounters

WALSENBURG, HOEHNE — The John Mall Panthers men’s basketball team stalled as the Panthers lost their weekend games to the Rye Thunderbolts, 67-57, and the Hoehne Farmers, 50-48.
